Hair Colour Trends for Fall/Winter 2014

The top hair hues and colouring techniques that will be in for the upcoming season.

1. Next level ombre: splashlights

Just call this halo-effect colour ombre’s little sister. It's meant to look like a ray of light is constantly hitting the hair, making it perfect for clients who like to live life in the spotlight. This can include crown lights—a bold style for those wanting a unique look—or fringe lights, which draw attention to the eyes and cheekbones), or a subtle gradation on the mid-length to create shine and dimension on long hair. Search Twitter/Instagram for the hashtag #splashlights for more inspiration from Redken artists.

2. Graffiti-inspired colour placement.

Roch Lemay, Matrix’s education and events director, says bold streaks of colour—in shades spotted on the runways, like sangria, cobalt blue, cypress green and bright yellows—can be used against lighter hues to create 3-D, transitional shading to create beautiful outlines. The key is to pick a color base that works for your client. Blondes should try an icy platinum. Dark reds can do a deep ox blood shade, but rich gingers, strawberry blondes and warm bronzes are also good bases. This season, neutral bases should have cool yellow undertone. “With any of these bases, add a 3D dimension with MATRIX Color Graphics lift n’tone or lacquers,” says Lemay. Mix bold colours with soft cuts for a contrasting effect.

3. The Mallen streak.

We never thought we'd say this, but streaks are back. They're purposeful, artistically placed and in a trendy shade: grey. Sassoon Colour Director John Beeson says a well-placed Mallen Streak accents a beautifully tailored shape, and can be re-adapted into different styles. “Amplify the lines of a client’s haircut by painting a bold and dramatic Mallen Streak under the parting of the hair. Build colours tone-on-tone to give hair a three dimensional quality. Use tones inspired by nature such as browns, bronzes and silver-toned beige for a modern and elegant look.”

4. Blurred lines.

Give clients a multi-tonal look they want using Redken's new Blur Brush (available in October 2014). The brush, which has long bristles to distribute formula more evenly helps create gentler hair colour transitions between shades and creates a third tone when two colours are blurred together. This can create stark, edgy styles or more natural looking highlights. Blur horizontally, vertically or diagonally for contrast, ombre highlights or soft movement. Use two shades with two to three levels of difference for best results.

5. The top blonde hue: chambre

Icy, cooler blondes have always be in during the cooler weather, but with peachy pastels becoming a huge colour trends this past spring, the big blonde shade of the season, according to pro blonder Kim Vo, Blonde Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional, is “chambre,” a fusion of champagne colour with an ombre technique. This toned down blonde with subtle gradation is created using freehand balayage highlighting that incorporates cotton as a barrier, using IGORA COLOR 10.

 6. Sunset-inspired shades

Lily Allen already started this colour trend with her sunset ombre hair. For colour-loving clients, amped-up shades inspired by the sky are going to be big. Think fiery, copper reds, golden hues and voilets. Robb Dubré, Kenra Professional® Senior Artistic Director says this kind of hair colour is all about “the subtle delineation of tones and strong diffusion of light.” Click here to download artistic colour placement charts for fiery red and sienna brown.

7. Hot shade: Punky purples

With many celebs rocking pastel purple hair this year, it's no wonder orchid shades are still popular heading into fall. Sue Pemberton, two-time NAHA winning colourist and Vero K-PAK Color International Artistic Director, offers two rock-inspired takes on this new colour trend using Vero K-PAK Color Intensity Color System's new shades: Titanium, Orchid, Magenta, and Light Purple. Try horizontal slices for maximum colour vsibiity on the surface, hidden vertical slices for subtle bursts of colour, or diagonal slices for a diffused colour effect. The results can be pretty bright, so she advises using Clear Mixer to control the intensity, and starting with a level 9 or higher for maximum vibrancy.

5 Popular Men’s Hairstyles For Autumn/Winter 2014

AW14’s Most Popular Hairstyles
Recently, here at Hooka, we’ve noticed our male clients becoming more experimental with length and weight lines in their haircuts.

This has been driven by an increased desire for something unique and bespoke (rather than looking like everyone else), which makes autumn/winter 2014 all about ‘you’.

In order to offer you some inspiration on your next cut, here is a breakdown of how I would create some of the most popular hairstyles for AW14, as well as possible adjustments you can make to create a more individual look.

All of these hairstyles can be mixed up and adjusted to your particular needs and/or hair type, and some of them can even be worn if your hair is receding, too:

1. Modern Short Back & Sides

This is a very modern, versatile haircut that can be worn in a variety of ways.

Here, the back and sides have been clippered on a number one grade, which is nice and tight to expose the scalp. We can see from the image that the hair is faded below the curve of the head; this is perfect for guys with longer face shapes as it helps balance their features. If you wanted, the hair could be clippered higher into the curve of the head to produce a much more dramatic look.

The hair has been point cut with scissors through the top to accentuate texture and movement. Once dried, the style has probably been texturised further by point cutting deeper into the hair, creating a ‘shattered’ finish.

We can also see that some colour has been added to the front of the haircut; most likely achieved by weaving sections into foil and applying some bleach onto the ends. Alternatively, it could be coloured freehand as it’s not too structured. Overall, it adds to the individual feel we are striving for and serves to emphasise texture, which was clearly the focus of this cut.

2. Dramatic Blunt Cut

The model in the image has got extremely thick hair, but this hairstyle actually suits a wide variety of hair types and face shapes.

We can see that the hair has again been clippered tight using a number one grade through the back and sides (a huge trend currently), while the top has been taken quite high into the crown area and left thick and chunky, creating almost a solid block effect.

The sides have been connected/blended using the clipper over comb technique or by simply increasing the clipper guard lengths. As we need the top to look as thick as possible, I would blunt cut this section and maybe point cut a little towards the front to give some support to the pompadour/quiff fringe.

If your crown has a tendency to stick up when it’s cut, there are two things you can do: leave more length around the area as the weight will pull it down, or take the clippers higher and the crown area shorter – this will help maintain the balance of the haircut as the front needs to look longer than the back for the style to work.

3. The Skin Fade

This is a very popular, current haircut. We can see that the sides have been taken even shorter than in the previous two hairstyles; this is classed as a skin fade, where the hair pretty much disappears into the hairline.

As the model has a fairly long face shape, the stylist has chosen not to take the fade too high into the curve of the head. This can all be discussed in your consultation, but it’s important to bear in mind that it will create an extreme aesthetic if the clipper work goes any higher.

The hair has been point cut short around the crown this time, then, working forward, over directed and pulled back towards the crown to maintain length at the front. As you can see at the temples, the stylist has chosen to leave a small amount of hair, which is a great way of hiding a receding hairline while strengthening the shape around the front.

Again, we can see this model has had some colour applied to his hair – definitely something worth considering if you’re looking to set yourself apart from the crowd this season. This colouring has been done with foils and the hair would have been weaved to create a subtle yet impactful effect.

If you are considering a similar style, you could always create a bolder look by having thicker weaves or going lighter in colour. On the other hand, if you wanted to be slightly more discreet, opt for finer weaves or use a darker colour.

4. The Undercut

We’ve seen a huge increase in the number of men asking for undercuts at the salon recently. This is down to guys choosing to grow more length through the top but still wanting to keep the sides nice and tight.

The above images both have quite a lot of length through the top, which can be hard for people to get used to – I would only suggest growing your hair like this if you’re willing to spend time styling it each day.

This style can suit many face shapes, but try to avoid letting it get too wide at the sides as it will make your hair (and face) look rounder. In the images above, the stylist has clippered the sides the same length, using a grade one up to where the undercut ends.

The hair through the top section can then either be razored (great for taking weight out of thicker hair) or point cut with scissors to create texture.

5. The Contrast Weight Line

This image shows just how extreme these type of hairstyles can get, and I personally think they look great with more length on top.

Here the back and sides have been clippered to a skin fade. The weight line is pretty heavy on this model (where the hair ends and clippering starts) and has been created by using the clipper over comb technique.

This is an excellent look for guys with naturally wavy or curly hair, with the hairstyle all about showing off movement in the cut. It’s also perfect for men with unruly crowns as we can see there is still a lot of length (and therefore weight) around this area to keep it under control.

The heavy weight line on the side, combined with the tight clippered edges, gives this haircut good contrast from top to bottom.

The top section has been razored or point cut deep into the hair to separate and accentuate the movement.

Final Word

That concludes our look at some of the most popular hairstyles for autumn/winter 2014. With a focus on tight clippering, subtle colouring and dramatic contrasts, there are numerous ways you can experiment with your hair this season to make it more individual to you.

All Mussed Up: 5 Messy-Meets-Chic Hairstyles

A perfectly manicured coiffure has its time and place, but there’s something deliciously satisfying about a messy head o’ hair. Perhaps it’s the carefree vibe it gives off, or maybe it has something to do with all those strands of hair that seem to harmoniously complement one another with seemingly minimal effort. Whatever it is, I dig it.

Below you’ll find five messy hairstyles that are one part chic and one part tousled. May you go forth and recreate them (and then earn yourself lots of compliments).

TWISTED AND TOUSLED

Here’s a quick, tousled hairstyle that’s perfect for summer. All that’s required for this look — which comes to you from the Treasures and Travels Blog –  is a large elastic headband and a few minutes of your time. Start by placing the headband around your head, then twist the front portion of hair (including bangs) around the headband. Spray a little sea salt water on the rest of your locks and then go about your day.

MESSY CURLS FOR SHORT HAIR

Don’t worry, shorties, I’ve got you covered. This messy curl look is brought to you by Amanda at the Indie Jane Photography blog. For this hairstyle, Amanda uses a flat iron to curl her entire head of hair in 1-inch sections at a time. After allowing the curls to cool, flip your head over and apply your favorite volumizing powder to the roots. Next, lightly coat with a flexible hold hair spray, scrunch and style as desired.

MESSY SIDE BRAID

This bohemian inspired messy braid, found on the befittingly named “A Beautiful Mess” blog, is perfectly lovely for midday shenanigans. To recreate, collect hair on one side of your head (or French braid it over to one side) and then tease like it’s your full time job. Braid into a standard braid, then pull the braid apart so it’s uneven and loose. The full tutorial is on the blog, so check it out for helpful tips!

DECONSTRUCTED PONY

“Achieving the perfectly tousled ponytail has long eluded me,” laments Kate of the Wit & Delight Blog. “It seems like a simple trick, but I’ve found many women have similar woes. Too high, too tight, not enough lift…” It seems like she’s figured it out, though, and shares the how-to with her readers. Note: there’s lots of teasing required for this one, but as you can see, the end result is simply smashing!

BED HEAD WAVES

YouTube User Lily Melrose knows how to “perfect” those enviable bed head waves, and it’s a look far easier to achieve than you’d think. First, use a professional grade flat iron (she uses about a 2-inch plate) and slowly rock it back and forth to create dents in your hair. You’ll see what I mean in the video. Once you’ve done this to all your hair, use a texturizing spray on the ends to amp up the muss factor and then use a hair spray to help set the look. She also uses a root powder for some lift around the temples.

6 essential winter hair care tips for women – The ultimate guide to hair care for winter

Winter hair woes

You’re in the mood to celebrate because the summer season is finally over and you thought so are your summer hair woes. But hang on there a second, summer’s over but winter is just around the corner. Winter is a beautiful season and reason for a lot of festivities but the cold temperatures and dry weather can wreak havoc on your hair. Be prepared to face hair problems like dry hair, dandruff, static hair, frizziness, split ends and bad hair days that seem to last for a month. Here are 7 winter hair care tips to keep your hair as healthy and gorgeous as always.

1) Use Shampoo Sparingly

Cold winter winds are drying not only for your skin but also for your hair and scalp. Shampooing your hair too often further increases the dryness caused by the cold weather leading your hair to become dull, dry and brittle. Avoid shampooing your hair more than twice a week. Also, avoid using hot water for rinsing your hair as hot water will make your hair frizzy. Lukewarm water and mild shampoo are ideal choices for winter.

2) Conditioning is a must

A good conditioner that moisturizes hair is a must-have for the winter season. Do not apply conditioner to your scalp, just the hair strands. Deep conditioning and using a hair mask once a week is a good way to retain hair’s moisture and shine.

3) Avoid using hair dryer

The ideal option is to let your hair dry naturally. Hair dryers expose your hair to a lot of heat which damages your hair and makes it frizzy. When you do have to use blow dryers, make sure that it is set in the ‘cool’ mode.

4) Wear a scarf or a hat

Letting your hair toss around in the cold wind is a bad idea. Wear a scarf, hat or a cap to protect your hair from the cold winds, lock the moisture of your hair and save it from breakage.

5) Oil your hair regularly

During winter hair needs as much as moisture as it can get. Massage your hair and scalp with warm olive oil. Leave it on for a few hours and then rinse it off with a mild shampoo. Olive oil infuses your hair with moisture, shine and bounce.

6) Fighting dandruff

Arrival of winter also means having to deal with hair problems like dandruff and itchy scalp. Here’s a tip on how to get rid of dandruff – Heat your hair oil until it is warm to touch. Add a few drops of lemon juice to it and mix well. Apply this mixture to your scalp and massage thoroughly. Leave it on for a few hours and then wash it off with a good hydrating shampoo. Using a good moisturizing conditioner will help to retain the moisture in your hair for a long time.

With these hair care tips, you’re sure to have a fun-filled winter. We all face different hair problems during the winter, share yours with us in the comments section below. Or if you have any more suggestions or solutions, please do tell!. Wishing you all a happy and fun-filled winter!

What Women Can Do To Treat Hair Loss

Our obsession with our hair reaches a whole new level when we start losing it. What we could once bend (or straighten or color) to our will feels suddenly, terrifyingly beyond our control. Or is it? Many of the causes of hair loss -- crash dieting, reactions to medications -- are temporary; address the underlying issue and your hair will grow back. Unfortunately, the most common culprit, genetic female pattern hair loss, is chronic. But you don't have to operate at a loss.

You're Not Alone
Sixty percent of women are dealing with some degree of hair loss ... or have in the past ... or will in the future.

The Good Bets

The topical solution
Minoxidil (brand name Rogaine), the only FDA-approved medication for female hair loss, is available over-the-counter in 2 and 5 percent formulas. (Only the lower dose is approved for women.) Massage it into your scalp twice a day; you should notice regrowth in six months. Results last only as long as you use the medicine. ($50 for a three-month supply)

The prescription drug
Spironolactone (brand name Aldactone) and finasteride (brand names Propecia and Proscar) are antiandrogen medications that can be prescribed off-label to postmenopausal women. (The drugs can cause birth defects, so they're not given to women of childbearing age.) Some 50 percent of women with female pattern hair loss will likely see regrowth. (Up to $90 for a one-month supply)

The permanent route
With a hair transplant, hair is removed from one part of the scalp and then implanted where you're thinning. Tiny "follicular units" of two to four hairs are transplanted; this can be effective even for women with diffuse thinning and few areas of "donor hair." In a survey of hair transplant surgeons led by dermatologist Walter Unger, MD, over half said that at least 40 percent of women with female pattern hair loss are candidates for surgery; many of those doctors believe that up to 80 percent of women with thinning hair can see successful results. ($3,000 to $15,000, depending on number of grafts and transplant sessions)

Instant and Cheap Gratification

Fullmore ($22) is a tinted spray that temporarily thickens hair with tiny fibers and conceals visible scalp. Hair restoration specialist Lucinda Ellery tells clients to try it before committing to extensions; for many it's the only fix they need.

Pantene AgeDefy Advanced Thickening Treatment ($20) is a styling spray that plumps each hair fiber. In a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2011, it increased the diameter of individual hairs significantly, by about 10 percent.

The Future Looks Bright (and Very Full)
Not satisfied with existing hair loss solutions? Sit tight...

Some doctors are already using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate hair growth, and there are many studies under way on the best methods to harness the technology. When separated from a patient's own blood, platelets release growth factors, which are then injected into the scalp to stimulate the hair shafts. "So far we're seeing decreased hair loss after one or two treatments, and some degree of new growth after three to five," says New York City dermatologist Neil Sadick, MD.

Bimatoprost, the synthetic prostaglandin in the prescription lash-growth serum Latisse, is in clinical trials for FDA approval as a topical scalp hair loss treatment. It could be available in the next few years.

Many researchers are investigating hair cloning. "I am hopeful that by 2025, we will be able to multiply hair from a small biopsy to produce unlimited follicles for transplantation," says hair restoration surgeon Alan Bauman, MD.
