Dermatologist Recommended Treatments for Hair Loss in Men

Hair loss in men is a very common problem. Iron deficiency, internal medical problems and certain infections can cause hair loss. However, the most common cause of hair loss in men is Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness). Almost 1 in 7 men suffer from various degrees of male pattern baldness. In India, this would run into millions of men. People, however, vary in their response to the problem. Some are not bothered by it and take it as a part of life. Many however go through various degrees of psychological trauma associated with hair loss. So, here are a few non-surgical treatment options suitable for younger men suffering from androgenetic alopecia.
Medications
Studies show that biotin strengthens the hair follicle and promotes hair growth. Biotin is one of the most expensive vitamins and is found in B-complex tablets, it is usually present in very low doses. High dose of biotin 8-10 mg are available invitamins targeted for hair growth. Naturally, biotin is present in non-vegetarian foods like eggs, organ meat and dairy products. Vegetarian sources include dark green leafy vegetables, lettuce, cabbage, spinach and nuts like almonds and walnuts.

A Minoxidil based lotion can also be used in the initial stages. It increases the blood supply to the scalp and can help reduce hair loss.

Finasteride, a medication which reduces the effect of the male hormone on the hair follicle by preventing it from converting into the active hormone can also be used. This however, may have side effects and should be initiated only after a specialist consultation.

Microneedling
In this, a roller blade like instrument called a dermaroller is gently rubbed on the areas of hair loss. This irritation of the skin stimulates the stem cells present in the deeper part of the hair follicle. The stem cells then grow out and have the potential to develop into new hair follicles. This is very effective in the initial stages of alopecia. The effect can be further enhanced by infusion of growth factors or stem cells. The channels created in the scalp with microneedling enables active medications to penetrate into the deeper layers where they are more effective.

Mesotherapy
Tiny injections of stem cells are administered into the skin. The injections are placed where they can have maximum benefit and there is very little wastage. This can be painful but the pain is significantly minimised by using a local numbing cream prior to the procedure. Advancement to this procedure is microneedling with the infusion of stem cells. This gives the benefits of microneedling in addition to the benefits of stem cell injection.

PRP (Platelet rich plasma)
The clients blood is drawn in the morning. The blood sample is then processed and the platelets are seperated. The platelets are then activated. These active platelets are then infused into the areas of hair loss in the scalp with microneedling or direct injections. The activated platelets can help reverse hair loss.

All these need to be carried out in conjunction with lifestyle factors. One needs to use a mild shampoo, restrict the use of chemicals like hair dyes, perming solutions and hair relaxers.

The process of regenerating new hair follicles and reversing the hair lossoccurs over a period of months and requires patience and persistence. If the treatment schedule is followed, the results can be very gratifying and can postpone the need for  hair transplant surgery.

11 Tips for Voluminous, Healthy Hair

Even if you weren't born with fine hair, you might notice your ponytail looking leaner as you get older. Plump your locks with these easy pointers

Hair is the one part of our body most of us wish were a little fatter. And while some women are born with thin hair, many will develop it over time. "Usually, women have breakage or hair loss caused by chemical treatments or flatiron abuse, but a health condition like anemia or a thyroid problem can also be the culprit," says Francesca Fusco, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Other common causes include stress and hormonal shifts (women may shed hair for up to a year after having a baby). If you notice dramatic or unexplained hair loss, see your doctor. Everyone else: Try these simple mane-thickening moves!

Products and Treatments

Keep It Clean
The squeakier fine hair is, the better (and bigger) it will look. "Like your facial skin, scalp tissue holds a lot of bacteria, and when combined with oil, it can weigh down the hair and impede healthy growth from your follicles over time," says Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Clinic in New York City. Shampoo daily with a clarifying formula. Try: L'Oreal Professionnel Volumetry shampoo ($23.50, at salons), which contains antibacterial, deep-cleansing salicylic acid. Chase with conditioner applied to the mid-shafts and ends only.

Do a Scalp Massage
Your scalp is the bedrock of your hair—keep it healthy, and your hair will grow in healthy, says Phillips. Once a week, swap your usual shampoo for one with mint or menthol, which is thought to help stimulate circulation, and massage it into your entire scalp (sides, nape, and crown) with the pads of your fingers for two minutes, then rinse. Try: Pantene Pro-V Weekly Deep Cleanse ($5, at drugstores), which contains mosa mint oil.

Deep-Treat
Being married to your flatiron or getting highlight-happy can put you on the fast track to thin hair. "High heat and chemical overload can weaken and dry out the hair, leading to breakage called trichorrhexis nodosa, and can put a strain on hair follicles and prevent healthy hair growth," says Fusco. Once a week, after shampooing, thoroughly rub a rich treatment mask into your scalp and hair, and rinse after three minutes. Try: Clear Scalp & Hair Deep Hydrating Treatment Mask ($5, at drugstores), which contains vitamins B5 and E and proteins to help strengthen hair over time, making it less likely to snap off.

Be Picky About Products
Thickening sprays and mousses are like puffer jackets: They give the illusion of bulk. "Both contain polymers that coat the hair and make it seem bigger," explains Phillips, who recommends a spray formula for straight hair, and a mousse to add definition to waves or curls. If using a spray, distribute it evenly through damp hair from roots to ends. Try: Rene Furterer Volumea volumizing conditioning spray ($26, at salons). For mousse, rake an egg-size dollop through damp hair, then style. Try: Garnier Fructis Style Sky-Hi Volume Mousse ($4.29, at drugstores).

Bring on the Hair Spray
It does more than simply lock your style in place. "Hair spray is very buildable, plus, you can brush it out as you go, and it gives hair this amazing thick, nonsticky feel with a little lift," says Benjamin Mohapi, a Los Angeles hairstylist. Try: Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray ($37, oribe.com), which has panthenol to swell the hair shaft as you spritz.

How To Use Aloe Vera for Hair Loss?

We all have a general idea on how this plant works. This succulent jelly-like plant substance, the core of the plant around which all our problems revolve is a thorny plant, a small one, of the cactus variety with fleshy leaves that forms the significant part of the plant. And within this leaves is hidden the secret elixir to all our hair problems.

Although widely known for its medicinal purposes, aloe vera has achieved excellence in the field of beauty as well and here it comes to effect while discussing about hair problems.

Don’t we all want that big lustrous flowing locks? That wonderful length? A thick healthy hair? And secretly don’t we all curse ourselves for the thinning hair. How many times have we combed through our hair and found more hair on the brush than on our head? All this problems, medically known as alopecia, is a common syndrome in today’s household. Along with this comes the stunted hair growth. Benefits and Uses of Aloe Vera for Hair Loss:

With the urbanization and frequent use of pesticides, food now has lost most of its natural ingredients that are either lacking the vitamin or the mineral or the taste. Even if everything changed , the age old tradition of using aloe vera for the thinning hair never did. Aloe vera continues to hold the key to a better hair. Among some of its benefits –
Aloe vera being an antioxidant acts as a stimulator to the hair, ir, increases the blood circulation that prevents hair from falling out radically.

Then the aloe vera comes with dandruff prevention properties which is also of great help since dandruff is one of the main causes of hair growth
Aloe vera also takes care of the excess hair oil and maintains the pH level of the hair making sure it doesn’t result to itchiness or dryness.

31 Powerful Home Remedies For Hair Growth That Work Wonders

Going the natural way!
Young or old, we love our hair.
Hair health plays the deciding role in factors like styling and personality. Conditions like hair fall, damage, dandruff are few of the common hair problems faced by all. Earlier hair fall used to be a sign of ageing. The ever-rising pollution, hectic lifestyle and never-ending work stress paves way for hair fall.
A. Diet For Hair Growth:

A few dietary modifications are very important for stimulating the process of hair growth preventing hair loss. Abolition of junk and processed food, aerated drinks, smoking and drinking is very beneficial for your body and the scalp health. Include vitamin and mineral rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, carbohydrates, omega 3 fatty acids and protein rich food in your diet. These are rich in phyto-nutrients which are beneficial for hair growth.

Below are the lists of some foods which you can include in your daily diet for better hair.

Protein-rich Foods:

Our hair is made of a special protein called the “keratin”. We should have a protein-rich diet. Include eggs, chicken, tofu, soybean; kidney beans and other similar foods to your diet. These are the richest source of proteins for hair. They promote the growth of new hair and make your hair shiny and smooth.

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A is beneficial for hair growth. Again, too much of it can cause hair loss. Mango, papaya, orange, prunes, carrot are few fruits with high contents of vitamin A.

Here is an excellent post on how vitamins help hair growth.

Vitamin B:

Vitamin B stimulates the production of haemoglobin in our blood which acts as the oxygen carrier. This increases the blood circulation in the scalp. Include potato, banana, chicken, oatmeal, fish and beans in your diet.

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C helps in the collagen production and fights off the free radicals in the skin. Do not forget to include lots of citrus fruits like amla, orange, kiwi, guava to your daily diet.

Vitamin E:

The scalp capillary function is stimulated by the intake of vitamin E in your diet. Thus it increases the blood circulation and promotes hair growth. Cereals, sunflower oil, soybean oil, tofu etc contain good amount of vitamin E. You must try and include as much of these foods to your diet as you can.

Green Vegetables:

Have lots of dark green vegetables. These contain iron which is really essential for hair growth. Fish is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids and so are nuts.

Natural Solutions:

Proper care and prevention will surely help to cope with any type of scalp or hair trouble. All the natural solutions will show their effect only when you are capable of fighting against indiscriminate hair loss.

‘No’ To Hair Styling Products:

A popular proverb says, ‘no style is the best style’. This is truest when it comes to hair. Many of the hair styling products contain harmful chemicals, and superficial agents, which can be highly dangerous at times. You may look attractive for a few days by applying a hair styling product, but you never know how it affects the condition of your hair and scalp in the long term. Therefore, you should try to minimize the application of harmful styling products like hair colors, serums, and straighteners.

The Secrets to Healthy, Younger-Looking Hair

Keep your locks looking luscious at any age with these must-try tips

Pro Pointers

The trick to maintaining healthy hair as you age could be as simple as switching your shampoo. Click though for smart solutions and expert tips to keep your tresses gorgeous—and take years off your face.

Thinning Hair

It's normal to shed up to 150 strands of hair a day. But over time you produce less hair and the diameter of the shaft thins as growth slows, explains Dr. Jeni Thomas, principal scientist for P&G Beauty. Instead of thickening products that just bind fibers together, look for something that contains caffeine or panthenol to actually increase the diameter of hair.

Changing Texture

Straight hair can suddenly turn wavy or vice versa once you're well into adulthood. "Texture changes are the result of genetics, hormone fluctuations or the environment and can be different for everyone," explains Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy dermatologist Francesca Fusco, MD. The easiest way to deal with your new texture? Switch to a shampoo and conditioner designed for your current hair type, or go with one formulated for aging hair.

8 Homemade Hair Treatments

Eggs, yogurt and honey are, at first glance, all components of a tasty breakfast—but they also happen to be hair treatment ingredients, and affordable, all-natural ones at that. And they're not the only ones. Did you know, for instance, that the oils in avocados more closely resemble our own skin's oils than any product in the beauty aisle does? Or that the mild acidity in lemon is an effective—and gentler—alternative to chemical-laden products? Next time your locks need a lift, save money by using one of these kitchen fixes.
For All Hair Types

"The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds," says Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty at Home. The yolk, rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the white, which contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils, she explains.
To Use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.

For Dull Hair

Styling products (as well as air pollution) can leave a film that both saps moisture and dulls shine—but dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. "Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes," says Lisa Belkin, author of The Cosmetics Cookbook.
To Use: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied every other week.

For Itchy Scalp

To fight flakes—brought on by poor diet, stress and climate, among other factors—try a lemon juice and olive oil mixture in your hair. "The acidity in lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturizes the [newly exposed] skin on your head," says Cox.
To Use: Mix 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 2 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp water, and massage into damp scalp. Let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every other week.
